Interim college presidents named for Big Sandy, Southeast Ky.

Dr. Todd Brand has been chosen to serve as interim president of Big Sandy Community and Technical College, following the announcement last month of Dr. Scott Rule’s departure. Phelps man charged with burning trailer belonging to wife, in-laws

Bruce HurleyPHELPS, Ky. — A Phelps man is in jail for arson, after allegedly setting a home on fire and documenting it in pictures. Court records accuse Bruce Hurley, 41, of setting fire to a mobile home owned by his wife and in-laws on Saturday. The arrest warrant says that he sent pictures of himself setting the trailer on fire to his wife. Police attempted to arrest him on Saturday, but he allegedly fled into Virginia. He was arrested Monday afternoon and charged with second-degree arson and fleeing police.

Pike man killed in motorcycle crash

VIRGIE, Ky. — A Pike County man is dead, following a crash between a motorcycle and a commercial vehicle. Anthony Burke, 46, of Virgie, was operating a Harley Davidson along Route 122 Monday afternoon, when he collided with the rear of a Mack truck. He died at the scene. The incident remains under investigation by Kentucky State Police.

Improper taillights lead police to meth trafficking arrest

MARTIN, Ky. — A Floyd County man who was pulled over for having his brake lights covered in duct tape ended up going to jail for meth trafficking. A sheriff’s deputy pulled over a Toyota pickup for having its lights covered. When he went to speak to the driver, identified as Terry Qualls, 69, of Martin, he recognized him as the subject of several tips from the public as being a drug trafficker. Pike man indicted on charge of threatening FBI agent

Gabriel HowellPIKEVILLE, Ky. — A Pike County man who was arrested for trespassing at an FBI agent’s home and threatening him has now been indicted in federal court. Gabriel Howell, 45, of Meta, is charged with threatening to assault the agent with the intent of intimidating him and retaliating against him for performing his duties. Court records indicate Howell had gone to the agent’s home in December, saying he had information about “murder and corruption” to report.
